Does having nuclear weapons successfully keep India and Pakistan in check (deterred) or will it lead to n. war

For all you International Relations and Poli Sci students/scholars out there. Do you think that possession of nuclear weapons between India and Pakistan can successfully deter each side and lead to stability. One side argues that possession of nuclear weapons will even the playing field since India has a military 5 times larger than that of Pakistan. Your input is appreciated :)
